Don't Sacrifice Public Health for Corporate Profits!

August 19, 2011

With Congress now considering critical energy and defense policy measures, powerful special interest groups are stepping up their efforts to persuade lawmakers to sacrifice our public health for corporate profits. Please take the time to petition your Florida Senators. Let them know that as their constituent, you want policy decisions based on science and sound public health models.

Here is a sample petition:

With Congress now considering critical energy and defense policy measures, I am deeply concerned that special interests are turning up pressure on lawmakers to protect huge corporate profits at the expense of human health and our environment.

As your constituent, I call on you to oppose these appalling efforts to sacrifice our safety for greed, and to make decisions based on sound science and sound public health policy - not politics and propaganda. I also urge you to press for stronger regulations to protect air quality and curb climate change, and to pursue urgently needed nuclear reactor safety reforms and additional reductions to the world's nuclear arsenals.

Signed,

Sign the Clean Air Promise Today

July 28, 2011

National PSR has teamed up with the League of Women Voters to launch the national “Clean Air Promise Campaign.”  It asks anyone who truly cares about the environment to pledge that they will stand up for clean air by opposing the proposals that would strip the EPA of it's power to enforce the Clean Air Act.

Please join us in signing this promise – either the original Promise, or PSR’s specially tailored Promise by Health Professionals. Together, we can tell legislators across the country that the health of our kids, our families and our neighbors must come first -- and that big polluters must clean the air.

Limit Coal-Fired Power Plants' Toxic Air Pollution

May 5, 2011

Did you know that coal-fired power plants aren't required to limit their emissions of pollutants that can cause cancer, asthma and other serious health problems? Thousands of Americans die premature deaths every year as a result. The coal-fired power industry and its allies have fought tirelessly against reasonable limits on the toxic pollution they generate. Are you ready to stand up and fight back?

After years of work by Earthjustice and advocates, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is finally preparing to clean this dirty industry up. Please take a moment to tell the EPA that you support limits on power plants' toxic air pollution. The health protections that the EPA recently proposed will reduce emissions of cancer-causing metals such as arsenic, chromium and nickel. These protections will save many lives.

Help protect everyone's right to breathe clean air by taking a moment to complete this EarthJustice letter campaign.

Save Our Seas Petition for Offshore Drilling Ban

February 10, 2011

In July 2010, Florida's citizens asked the Legislature to place an offshore drilling ban before the voters. Unfortunately, the Legislature did not agree to put the amendment on the November 2010 ballot. In light of the inaction of the Legislature, and to forestall any future attempt to allow near-shore oil drilling, Save our Seas, Beaches and Shores, Inc. is petitioning to place the offshore drilling ban on the November 2012 ballot. Approximately 700,000 verified petitions are required. If you are interested in signing this petition, download a copy, print it and fill it out in its unmodified form.

Please note that ONLY registered Florida voters can sign the petition. No changes can be made to the form. Fill out the form, sign it, and date it.

Tell the EPA to ban Triclosan

January 26, 2011

Triclosan is commonly found in everyday consumer products, ranging from toys to toothpaste. Research indicates that widespread use of triclosan causes a number of serious health and environmental problems.

We have until February 7, 2011, to let EPA know that triclosan must be banned in non-hospital settings to protect public health. Your voice is critical in petitioning to ban the hazardous antibacterial triclosan for non-medical use.

Please note: To enter a comment in the public docket, copy the letter below and paste it into the comment box or write your own, original comments. You may enter your personal information in the “contact” fields or leave those fields blank. If you sign your electronic comments, your name will be published in the EPA docket.

Sample Letter:

I am writing to support the concerns raised in the petition submitted by Beyond Pesticides and Food and Water Watch regarding the prevalence of the toxic pesticide triclosan in consumer products. Research has shown that triclosan poses a threat to human health, contaminates water, and persists in the environment. EPA has a responsibility under the law to protect the health of the public and the environment and must move to do so now. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) finds triclosan concentrations are increasing in the human population, and triclosan in consumer products is causing involuntary exposure directly and through environmental contamination. Triclosan has been linked to:

- endocrine disruption as it interferes with the thyroid, estrogen, and androgen hormones and as a result can impact fetal development
- bacterial resistance and possible cross-resistance to antibiotics
- contaminated biosolids that are used for compost and agricultural fertilizer
- toxic and persistent breakdown products including dioxins

Since triclosan is no more effective than regular soap and water at reducing bacteria, there is absolutely no need for triclosan to be incorporated into consumer products, given the potential human health hazards. Please move quickly to rid this chemical from consumer products.

Make New START a Priority Today

August 18, 2010

We could be just weeks away from a historic victory that helps move forward towards a nuclear weapons free world.  Or we could be derailed at the last minute by the dangerous nuclear dinosaurs who want to stop any progress toward a safer, more healthy future.

The US Senate is in recess, and that means we've got work to do.  Let your senators hear from you - let them know you want New START at the top of the agenda when they return to Washington.

Make your voice heard.  Call your senator's local office. For those living in the Tampa area, contact:

Senator (R-Florida) George LeMieux
Phone: (202) 224-3041
District Phone: (407) 254-2573

Senator (D-Florida) Bill Nelson
Phone: (202) 224-5274
District Phone: (407) 872-7161

As you make your calls, please keep the following key points in mind.

1) New START is an urgent and essential step in strengthening our nation’s security.

2) When the Senate returns from break, positive action on New START must be on the top of the agenda.

3) If you are a health professional, please mention that during your call.  The medical voice adds credibility to our message.

Get Tough on Toxics

April 22, 2010

Current laws are not protecting us from toxic chemical exposure. Right now, chemicals are allowed to enter our homes, workplaces, and communities with little or no testing for human toxicity. We need to strengthen the bill to make it harder for new harmful chemicals to enter the marketplace.

Don't Undermine Public Safety in New Reactor Licensing

June 30, 2010

Even as the consequences of lax regulation and lax oversight are washing oil onto the Gulf coast, proposed climate legislation in the Senate would cut regulatory corners in licensing new nuclear reactors. Please contact your senators today and tell them that any measures that would deregulate the NRC licensing process are absolutely unacceptable.

Urge a Permanent Moratorium on New Offshore Drilling

July 1, 2010

The disaster taking place in the Gulf of Mexico should end all attempts to further expand offshore drilling. Urge President Obama to permanently end efforts to open up more of our coast to drilling.
