Gulf Oil Disaster: From Crisis to Solutions

Wednesday, August 11, 2010 - 7:00pm - 9:00pm
Location:
Hilton Garden Inn, 1700 E. 9th Ave. Ybor City (769-9267)

An event by Tampa Bay Sierra Club, free and open to the public

Free parking in hotel lot

Join guest speakers Darden Rice, Michelle Simoneau, and Phil Compton as they discuss the lessons learned from the oil spill crisis. These local leaders, who were on the frontlines, will give their inside accounts of dealing with federal and state agencies, working with environmental groups and volunteers, and bringing the message on the dangers of offshore drilling to the public and legislators.

Darden Rice, Florida Program Director for Gulf Restoration Network, will discuss the wider impacts of the spill throughout the Gulf region from damage to wetlands and beaches to impacts on marine life and the economy. She will tell us about GRN’s massive response work and give us a behind the scenes look at the cleanup process from Louisiana to Florida.

Michelle Simoneau is spokesperson for Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary in Indian Shores. The sanctuary was one of the first wildlife rescue operations to put out a call for action in the first days of the disaster. Thousands of volunteers provided donations and offered to help in seabird rescue, but the sanctuary was mostly overlooked by BP and federal agencies to help in relief efforts. Michelle will let us know why this happened and what can be done in the future.

Phil Compton has been a longtime activist and leader in the Tampa Bay area who was instrumental in organizing the local Hands Across the Sand offshore drilling protest on June 26. He is also a major force in the Sierra Club’s clean energy campaign and can tell us how to take action to convince our legislators to move in the right direction for a clean and healthy Gulf.

Tampa Bay Sierra Club general meetings are free and open to the public. Call Marcia Biggs at 727-797-6261 for more information.
